What llms.txt is

llms.txt is a plain text file at the root of a website (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that tells AI tools, in a few lines, what the site is and which pages matter most. Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed it in September 2024. It is written in Markdown: a heading with your name, a one-line summary, a few notes, then lists of links with a short note on each.

What it does and doesn't do

Be honest with yourself about this one. llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard. Some AI coding tools and documentation sites use it, but no major AI search engine has said it reads llms.txt to decide what to show or whom to cite, and Google's guidance for AI features doesn't mention it.

So add it because it is cheap and harmless, not because it will move rankings. What does decide whether AI can read and name you is that your robots.txt lets the AI search crawlers in (check with the AI crawler checker) and that your pages state your facts clearly.

How to add it

1. 1Fill in the form: your name, one sentence on what you do, and your five to fifteen most useful pages.
2. 2Download the file. It must be named exactly llms.txt.
3. 3Upload it to the root of your website, next to robots.txt.
4. 4Open yoursite.com/llms.txt in a browser to check it shows as plain text.

Where the file goes:

• WordPress: upload it with your host's file manager, or use a plugin that serves llms.txt.
• Next.js and other code: put it in the public folder.
• Wix, Squarespace and Shopify: these don't always allow root files; skip it if yours doesn't.

What to put in it

Write the summary like the answer you would want an AI to give: what you do, where, and for whom. List pages that answer real questions (services, prices, areas you serve, how to book) before the blog. Keep the notes factual. Nothing in the file should disagree with your website.
