SEO cost in India: what you pay for, and how to compare quotes

Updated 22 October 2026 · 5 min read · By Mohamed Asif M

The short answer

There's no standard SEO price in India: quotes from freelancers, agencies and software differ widely because they cover very different work. Compare quotes on scope, not the monthly number: which pages they'll fix, what they'll write, how they'll report, and who owns the accounts. Be wary of anyone who guarantees rankings; Google says nobody can.

Key points

  • SEO is sold as monthly retainers, one-off audits, per-page content, or software subscriptions.
  • Two quotes with the same price can cover completely different amounts of work; ask for the scope in writing.
  • The basics (Search Console, Business Profile) cost nothing but time; you pay for skill, writing and hours.
  • Guaranteed rankings, secret methods and bulk directory submissions are warning signs, at any price.

The honest answer: it depends on scope

Ask ten providers what SEO costs and you'll get ten different numbers, and they won't be comparable. One quote might cover a technical audit and a monthly report. Another might include writing four pages a month, managing your Google Business Profile and building local listings. A third is software you run yourself.

We won't quote you an "average SEO price in India". There's no reliable public figure, and an average of things that aren't alike doesn't help you decide. What does help is knowing what you're paying for.

The five ways SEO is sold

ModelWhat you usually getGood for
Monthly retainer (agency or freelancer)Ongoing fixes, content, reporting, often link and listing workBusinesses that want it handled and can commit for months
One-off auditA list of problems and priorities, sometimes with a callOwners or in-house staff who'll do the fixes
Per-page or per-post contentWritten pages or blog posts, priced per pieceSites with a clear list of pages to write
Hourly consultingExpert time for specific problemsMigrations, penalties, technical issues
Software subscriptionTools that check, track and sometimes fixOwners who want visibility and control

Many businesses combine two: an audit plus software, or software plus a freelancer for writing.

What drives the price up or down

  • How competitive your searches are. "Wedding photographer Mumbai" is a much harder search than "wedding photographer Nashik". Harder searches need more pages, more content and more time.
  • How many locations you serve. One clinic is one profile and a handful of pages. Ten branches multiply the work.
  • The state of your site. A site with indexing problems, duplicate pages or a slow theme needs fixing before anything else helps.
  • Content. Writing good pages takes the most hours. A quote that includes real, researched writing will cost more than one that only tweaks titles.
  • Who does the work. A senior specialist costs more per hour than a junior; the question is how many hours each needs and how good the result is.
  • Reporting and access. Clear monthly reports tied to Google's own numbers take time to prepare. They're worth paying for.

What you can do for free

Before paying anyone, the basics cost only your time:

  • Set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.
  • Create and complete your Google Business Profile.
  • Give each main service its own clear page, using our SEO checklist.
  • Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to every one.

Doing these first means any money you spend later goes on work you couldn't do yourself.

What a fair quote should spell out

Ask for these in writing, whatever the price:

  1. 1The pages they'll work on in the first three months, by name.
  2. 2What they'll write, how many pieces, and who checks the facts.
  3. 3What they'll change on your site, and whether you approve changes first.
  4. 4How they'll report: which numbers, from which source (Search Console is Google's own), and how often.
  5. 5Who owns the accounts: your domain, Search Console, Business Profile and analytics should stay in your name.
  6. 6What happens when you stop: the content and changes should stay yours.

The questions Google itself suggests asking

Google's page on hiring an SEO lists questions worth asking any provider, including: Can you show me examples of your previous work? Do you follow the Google Search Essentials? What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success? What's your experience in my industry, and in my country or city? Will you share all the changes you make to my site?

Red flags at any price

Google's same page names the warning signs:

  • Guaranteed rankings. "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
  • Unsolicited emails promising page one.
  • Secrecy about what they'll do to your site.
  • Asking you to link to them as part of the deal.
  • Submitting your site to thousands of search engines or directories. See directory submission sites.

Add one more from experience: reports that show only numbers from the provider's own tool, never Google's. Ask for Search Console figures.

What SEO software costs (prices checked 22 October 2026)

Software is the one area with public prices. A few examples, at the cheapest paid plan we found on each tool's own pricing page:

ToolCheapest paid plan
Semrush$139 a month
Ahrefs$29 a month (limited), Lite $129
SE Ranking$129 a month
Moz Pro$49 a month
BrightLocal (local SEO)$41 a month
ParSEO₹2,999 a month (Starter), ₹6,999 (Grow), ₹12,999 (Scale)

These tools differ a lot in what they do; see AI SEO tools and our Semrush comparison. Prices change, so check each tool's own page before you buy.

Agency, freelancer or tool: how to choose

  • Little time, clear budget, competitive market: an agency or experienced freelancer, with the written scope above.
  • Some time, want control: do the basics yourself and use a tool to track and guide the rest.
  • A specific problem (a site migration, pages not indexed): hourly help from a specialist.

Whichever you pick, judge it by Google's own numbers over months, not by a single report. How long SEO takes explains what to expect when.

A worked example

A CA firm in Ahmedabad (a made-up example) gets two quotes at a similar monthly price. Quote A promises "top 3 rankings for 20 keywords in 90 days". Quote B lists the six service pages it will rewrite, a monthly Search Console report, Business Profile management, and says all accounts stay in the firm's name. Quote A guarantees rankings, which Google says no one can do. Quote B is specific and checkable. The firm picks B, and asks for the first report to include the starting numbers, so later reports can be compared against them. See also our page for CA and tax firms.

ParSEO is the software option with the agency's habits: it checks your site daily, explains what to fix first, makes changes only with your OK, and keeps a dated receipt for each. Plans are in rupees with every limit written down on pricing, and you can start your Day 0 to see your baseline first.

Questions people ask

How much do small businesses pay for SEO?

It varies widely, because providers include very different work. There's no reliable public average for India. Compare quotes on written scope: which pages, how much writing, what reporting, and who owns the accounts.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Sometimes, if the scope is honest and clear. Low prices become a problem when they come with guaranteed rankings, bulk directory or link schemes, or no access to Google's own numbers.

Should I pay for SEO monthly or one time?

A one-time audit works if someone on your side will make the fixes. Ongoing work suits businesses that want pages written and improved month after month. Many start with an audit and then decide.

Can SEO results be guaranteed?

No. Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and it lists ranking guarantees as a warning sign.
