Directory submission sites in India: which ones still help in 2026

Updated 22 October 2026 · 5 min read · By Mohamed Asif M

The short answer

Mass directory submission no longer helps SEO and can hurt: Google's spam policies list low-quality directory links as link spam, and its advice on hiring an SEO warns against anyone submitting your site to thousands of search engines. A few listings do help: the platforms your customers actually use to find businesses like yours (Justdial, IndiaMART, Practo, Zomato and similar), plus Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Keep your name, address and phone identical on each.

Key points

  • Lists of hundreds of "high DA directory submission sites" are a leftover from old SEO. Skip them.
  • Useful listings are the ones real customers browse: pick five to ten that fit your trade and city.
  • Each listing should show exactly the same name, address and phone as your Google Business Profile.
  • Quality beats count: one accurate listing on a site customers use is worth more than a hundred nobody visits.

The short history

Years ago, search engines leaned heavily on counting links, so SEO providers submitted sites to hundreds of directories to collect links quickly. Search engines adapted. Today Google's spam policies name "low-quality directory or bookmark site links" as an example of link spam, and its page on hiring an SEO warns against providers who talk about "submitting your site to thousands of search engines".

So when someone sends you a list of "500 free directory submission sites", or offers a package of directory links, the honest answer is no.

Why some listings still matter

Listings still help, just for different reasons than before:

  • Customers use them. Many people in India search Justdial for a plumber, Practo for a doctor, Zomato for a restaurant, IndiaMART for a supplier. Being there, correctly, brings calls directly.
  • They confirm your details. Google ranks local results partly on prominence, which it says draws on information from across the web, such as links, articles and directories. Accurate, consistent listings on well-known platforms back up what your Business Profile says.
  • AI assistants read them. Assistants that answer "best physiotherapist in Kothrud" can draw on well-known listing and review sites. An accurate listing gives them correct facts.

These are called local citations: mentions of your name, address and phone on other sites. Our NAP glossary entry explains why consistency matters.

The listings worth having

For almost every local business

ListingWhy
Google Business ProfileThe most important; drives map results. See how to create one
Bing Places for BusinessBing's equivalent; quick to set up, can import from Google
Apple Business ConnectControls how you appear in Apple Maps on iPhones
JustdialWidely used across Indian cities for local services
Facebook and Instagram business pagesMany customers check them before calling

By industry

IndustryListings customers use
Doctors, dentists, clinicsPracto, Lybrate
Restaurants and cafesZomato, Swiggy, EazyDiner
Manufacturers, suppliers, B2BIndiaMART, TradeIndia
Home servicesUrban Company (if you work through it), Sulekha
Real estateMagicBricks, 99acres, Housing.com
Coaching and educationShiksha, and your city's local listing sites
Hotels and staysBooking platforms you already sell through, and Tripadvisor

You don't need all of them. Pick the ones your customers mention when you ask "how did you find us?", plus the general ones above.

Associations and local sources

Your trade body, chamber of commerce, market association, alumni directory or a local news site's business guide: these are genuine, relevant mentions and are often worth more than any national directory.

How to do it properly

  1. 1Write down your exact details once: business name, address (with pin code), phone, website, hours, categories. Use the same text everywhere.
  2. 2Search for existing listings first. Many platforms create listings automatically from public data. Claim the existing listing instead of making a duplicate.
  3. 3Fill each listing completely: categories, hours, photos, a short description. A half-empty listing doesn't help customers.
  4. 4Link to the right page: your home page, or the branch page for that location.
  5. 5Keep a simple sheet with each listing's address and login. When anything changes (phone, address, hours), update every listing the same week.

Signs a "directory package" is a bad deal

  • It promises a number of links ("200 high DA backlinks").
  • The sites are generic directories with no real visitors in your city or trade.
  • They won't tell you which sites, or the list changes every month.
  • It's sold as a ranking shortcut.

Google's policies call links bought for ranking purposes link spam. Spending that budget on better service pages or a proper review process does more.

What about backlinks generally?

Backlinks from relevant, real websites still matter for SEO. The difference is how they're earned: a supplier listing you as a stockist, a local paper writing about your opening, an industry association's member page. Those links come with real readers. Directory blasts don't.

A worked example

A dental clinic in Bhopal (a made-up example) finds it's listed on more than 20 sites, many created automatically, with two old phone numbers and a previous address. Instead of adding more, the clinic claims and fixes the listings that matter: Google Business Profile, Practo, Justdial, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Facebook. It reports the duplicates where the platform allows it, and ignores the dozen generic directories nobody visits. All six key listings now show the same name, address and phone. See our local SEO checklist for Indian clinics and our page for dental and medical clinics.

Where this fits

Listings are one part of local SEO, after your Business Profile and your website. If you're working through the whole picture, start with local SEO for small business.

ParSEO tracks your searches, including when a portal outranks you, checks your details are consistent, and fixes your own website with your OK. It doesn't edit portal listings, so keep the sheet above. You can start your Day 0 to see your baseline.

Questions people ask

Do directory submission sites help SEO in 2026?

Mass submissions don't, and Google's spam policies call low-quality directory links link spam. A few accurate listings on platforms your customers really use do help, for customers and for confirming your details.

Which directories should an Indian business list on?

Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect for everyone, then the platforms your trade's customers use, such as Justdial, Practo, Zomato, IndiaMART or MagicBricks.

Are free directory submission lists safe to use?

Lists of hundreds of generic directories aren't useful and can be risky. Google warns against providers who submit sites to thousands of search engines.

What is a local citation?

A mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website, such as a listing site or association page. Consistent citations help confirm your details.
