Crawl budget
Updated · 2 min read · By The ParSEO team
The short answer
How many pages a search engine is able and willing to crawl on a site in a given time.
Crawl budget is the amount of crawling a search engine does on your site, shaped by how fast your server responds (crawl capacity) and how much the engine wants to crawl (crawl demand).
Google says most sites don't need to worry about it: it matters mainly for very large sites or sites with lots of rapidly changing pages. For a small business site with a few hundred pages, focus on quality and indexing instead.
What wastes crawling on any site: endless filter or calendar URLs, long redirect chains, and many near-duplicate pages.
In practice
In practice, a small business site rarely has a crawl budget problem. If new pages take a long time to be crawled, the usual causes are weak internal links to those pages, a slow server, or many low-value URLs (filters, tags, tracking parameters) competing for attention. Fix those before worrying about budget.
