AI Mode

The short answer
Google Search's conversational mode, where people ask follow-up questions and get AI-written answers with links to sources.
AI Mode is a conversational way of searching on Google: people ask a question, then follow-ups, and get AI-written answers with links to the pages used.
Google's guidance treats AI Mode like AI Overviews for site owners: a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be shown as a supporting link, and there's no separate opt-in. Its traffic is reported in Search Console together with other web results.
For a business, AI Mode raises the value of pages that answer detailed, specific questions, because conversational searches tend to be longer and more precise than typed keywords.
In practice
In practice, AI Mode rewards pages that cover a topic well enough to answer follow-up questions: not only what a service is, but who it suits, what it costs, how long it takes and what to watch out for. Businesses with thin pages that answer only the first question tend to be passed over for sources that cover the follow-ups.
