Google Business Profile verification: every method, and what to do if it stalls

Updated 22 October 2026 · 5 min read · By Mohamed Asif M

The short answer

Google verifies that you really run a business before your profile shows fully on Search and Maps. Google picks which methods you're offered (video recording, phone or text, email, live video call, postcard, or sometimes instant), and you can't change them; Google recommends video when it's offered. After you finish, Google's review takes up to 5 business days. Most delays come from a video that doesn't show the location, signage and proof you run the place.

Key points

  • Verification methods are chosen by Google and can't be changed. Use the one offered; video is recommended when available.
  • For video, show where you are, your business or equipment, and proof you manage it, in one continuous recording.
  • Postcard codes expire after 30 days. Don't edit your name, address or category while you wait.
  • Google's review takes up to 5 business days after you complete the steps, occasionally longer.

Why Google asks you to verify

Anyone can suggest a business on Google Maps, so Google needs to know the person managing a profile really runs the business. Verification is that check. Until a profile is verified, you can't fully manage it, and edits may not show publicly.

If you haven't created the profile yet, start with how to create a Google Business Profile.

The verification methods

Google's help page lists these methods. Which ones you see depends on your business type, location, history and other factors; Google says the methods are determined automatically and can't be changed.

MethodHow it worksGood to know
Video recordingYou record and upload a short video of your businessRecommended by Google when it's offered
Phone or textGoogle calls or texts a code to your business numberAutomated phone menus (IVR) won't receive the code; answer the line directly
EmailGoogle emails a code or link to an address it shows youYou must be able to access that exact address
Live video callYou show the business to a Google support person liveOnly during your business hours; needs a device that supports video calls
PostcardGoogle posts a code to your business addressThe code expires after 30 days
InstantSometimes Google verifies a profile straight awayFor example, when the site is already verified in Search Console

Verifying by video: what to show

Video is the method where small details decide the outcome. Google's guidance asks you to show three things:

  1. 1Your location: outside signs, nearby businesses, or a street sign that confirms where you are.
  2. 2Your business or equipment: your products, branded equipment, marketing materials, or the tools you use to serve customers.
  3. 3Proof you manage the business: access to employee-only areas, or items like a cash register, kitchen or storage room, or non-sensitive business documents. You can also use your keys to open the place.

Tips that help:

  • Record in one continuous take, starting outside and walking in. Don't cut between clips.
  • Make sure the signboard matches the business name on the profile.
  • Film in daylight, steadily, without people's faces in focus if you can avoid it.
  • Service-area businesses: show your vehicle with branding, your tools, and proof you run the business (for example, opening a locked storeroom or showing the work van's keys and logo).

If the video isn't accepted, Google shows a "review issues" message; record a new one that covers whatever was missing.

Verifying by postcard

Postcards go to the exact address on the profile, so check it carefully, including the pin code and a landmark if your area needs one. While you wait:

  • Don't edit the business name, address or category.
  • Give the postcard time to arrive before asking for another one, so codes don't cross in the post.
  • Enter the code as soon as it arrives. It expires after 30 days.

After you submit: the review

Google says that after you complete the steps it reviews the information, and verification reviews take up to 5 business days, rarely longer. You'll get an email when the business is verified. During that time, avoid making changes to the profile.

When verification stalls or fails

  • No method offered, or none you can use: check the profile meets the guidelines (real name, eligible address, one profile per business). If you still can't verify, Google's help page links to its support team.
  • Video rejected: re-record showing all three elements clearly: location, business or equipment, and proof you manage it.
  • Phone code never arrives: take the call on the business number directly, not through an automated menu.
  • Suspended after verifying: usually a guideline issue (keywords in the name, a virtual office, a duplicate profile). Fix the cause and then request reinstatement through Google's form.
  • An old profile is verified by someone else (a former employee or agency): request ownership through the profile. Google contacts the current owner and tells you what happens next.

Is it worth getting verified?

Yes. A verified profile is one you control: you can update hours, reply to reviews, add services and photos, and see how customers find you. It also protects you from wrong edits by others. Verification is the gate to everything in Google Business Profile optimisation.

How to check if you're verified

Open your profile while signed in to the business's Google account (search your business name on Google, or open Google Maps). A verified profile shows the management panel with options to edit, and you'll have received a confirmation email. If the profile asks you to "Get verified", it isn't verified yet.

A worked example

A pest control business in Nagpur (a made-up example) works from a small office but mainly visits customers. Google offers video verification. The first video shows only the inside of the office and is rejected. The owner records again in one take: the street sign and the building from outside, the signboard matching the profile name, unlocking the office with their keys, the branded spray equipment and the company van, and a non-sensitive invoice book. The profile is verified within the review period. The owner then sets the profile as a service-area business with the areas they cover, following local SEO for small business. Questions people ask

How do I check my Google business verification?

Sign in to the business's Google account and open your profile on Google Search or Maps. If you can edit it and you got a confirmation email, it's verified. If it shows a prompt to get verified, it isn't yet.

Is it worth getting verified on Google?

Yes. Verification lets you control your profile: update hours, reply to reviews, add services and photos, and see how customers find you. Without it, you can't fully manage how your business appears.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

After you complete the steps, Google says the review takes up to 5 business days, and occasionally longer. Postcards also take time to arrive, and their codes expire after 30 days.

Can I choose my verification method?

No. Google says verification methods are automatically determined and can't be changed. Use one of the methods offered; Google recommends video when it's available.
